Constraining dark matter microphysics with the annihilation signal from subhalos

چکیده

In the cold dark matter scenario, galactic halos are populated with a large number of smaller subhalos. Previous work has shown that annihilations in subhalos can generate distinctive, non-Poisson signal gamma-ray photon counts probability distribution function (PDF). Here we show PDF also carries information about velocity dependence annihilation cross section. After calculating assuming $s$-wave and Sommerfeld-enhanced annihilation, perform mock data analysis to illustrate how current future observations constrain microphysics annihilation. We find that, Fermi data, section roughly at limit bounds from dwarf spheroidal galaxies, one potentially distinguish non-Poissonian fluctuations expected Poisson sources, as well models an incorrect velocity-dependence. explore robust these results assumptions modeling astrophysical backgrounds. point out four-parameter degeneracy between minimum subhalo mass, power law index mass function, normalization signal. This be broken priors N-body simulations or observational constraints on function.

Gamma rays from dark matter subhalos in the

In the case that dark matter consists of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), dark matter subhalos in the Milky Way could be detectable as gamma-ray point sources due to WIMP annihilations. In this thesis, we study the detectability of dark matter subhalos with Fermi-LAT. We improve on previous work in two ways. Firstly, we take into account the effects of baryons on the density profil...

Exploring dark matter microphysics with galaxy surveys

We use present cosmological observations and forecasts of future experiments to illustrate the power of large-scale structure (LSS) surveys in probing dark matter (DM) microphysics and unveiling potential deviations from the standard ΛCDM scenario. To quantify this statement, we focus on an extension of ΛCDM with DM–neutrino scattering, which leaves a distinctive imprint on the angular and matt...

Constraining Dark Matter annihilation cross-sections with the Cosmic Microwave Background

The injection of secondary particles produced by dark annihilation around redshift ∼ 1000 would inevitably affect the process of recombination, leaving an imprint on cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropies. We show that the most recent CMB measurements provided by the WMAP satellite mission and the ACT telescope place interesting constraints on DM self-annihi...

Dark matter annihilation at cosmological redshifts: possible relic signal from weakly interacting massive particles annihilation

We discuss the possibility to observe the products of dark matter annihilation that was going on in the early Universe. Of all the particles that could be generated by this process we consider only photons, as they are both uncharged and easily detectable. The earlier the Universe was, the higher the dark matter concentration n and the annihilation rate (proportional to n) were. However, the em...

Constraining Dark Matter candidates from structure formation

We show that collisional damping of adiabatic primordial fluctuations yields constraints on the possible range of mass and interaction rates of Dark Matter particles. Our analysis relies on a general classification of Dark Matter candidates, that we establish independently of any specific particle theory or model. From a relation between the collisional damping scale and the Dark Matter interac...
